Neuromuscular
The Neuromuscular Division specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nerves and muscles. We provide comprehensive assessment of patients with neuropathy, myopathy (inherited and inflammatory), myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, and autonomic disorders.
Symptoms that suggest neuromuscular disease include:
- Progressive weakness
- Loss of muscle bulk
- Muscle twitching
- Numbness and pain in the feet and hands
Neuromuscular specialists have advanced training to perform electromyograms (EMG). This test is an important measure used to diagnose nerve and muscle diseases. This test records the electrical activities in the affected nerve and muscle which provides valuable information about the condition to guide treatment.
A Neuromuscular evaluation begins with a thorough consultation in our clinic. This includes review of outside study results, a detailed medical history and physical examination. Upon completion of the exam, blood tests and an EMG may be requested.
In certain cases, a biopsy may be requested to obtain more information. The Neuromuscular Clinic at Upstate Bone & Joint Center offers needle muscle biopsy service for diagnosis of myopathy. We collaborate with colleagues in the Pathology Department for interpretation of muscle and nerve biopsies.
